  • ArcGIS Server requires a 64-bit operating system; 32-bit operating systems are not supported.
  • Python 2.7 (64 bit) is installed with ArcGIS for Server.
  • Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and XP: These operating systems are supported for basic testing and application development use only. They are not recommended for deployment in a production environment.

ArcGIS for Server supported platforms (Linux)

Operating Systems
Minimum OS Version
Maximum OS Version
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5
Update 7 + libX11 patch*
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SP1
  • ArcGIS for Server is only supported on Linux x86_64, on CPUs that adhere to the x86_64 architecture (64 bit), with supported Linux releases.
  • Python 2.7 (64 bit) is installed with ArcGIS for Server.
  • It is a requirement that the OS (binary) has not been modified. Esri does not provide any support if products are installed on Developer's Release of an Operating System.
  • The File handle limit for the installation user needs to be set to 65535.
  • The process limit needs to be increased from 1024 to 25059.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux

  • The Linux patches from RHEL AS/ES will be supported as long as the patches are supported by the web servers and they are from Red Hat without any modification to the latest kernel/glibc version.
  • The following package groups are required:
    • For RHEL 6: from Desktop group
      • X Window System package group
      • Xvfb
    • For RHEL 5: from Base System group
      • X Window System package group
*Visit Red Hat Support for RHEL 5 Update 7 + libX11 patch information.

SUSE Linux 11

  • The Linux patches for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server will be supported as long as they are from SUSE Linux without any modification to the latest kernel/glibc version.
  • The following software packages are required:
    • From System/X11/Utilities package group
      • X Window System

ArcGIS Server Manager supported browsers

  • Firefox 10 or higher
  • Google Chrome 10 or higher
  • Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, and 10
It is recommended that you use Manager in either a Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer 9 or 10 browser for the best possible experience. Using Internet Explorer 7 and 8 may result in a lower-quality display of Manager.

Hardware requirements

For a development environment, the minimum RAM requirement for ArcGIS Server is 4 GB. This requirement is based on a typical development server with the following environment:
  • Two cached map services
  • One dynamic map service
  • One locator service
  • One geoprocessing service
  • Geometry service
  • PrintingTools service
  • SQL Server Express
  • IIS with Web Adaptor
For a production environment, hardware minimum requirements are not listed because user and business needs of ArcGIS Server may vary. These requirements must be considered in determining hardware needs to meet user performance expectations and scalability. Please refer to the Infrastructure Performance Considerations and System Design Strategies wiki for assistance in designing a server infrastructure that would meet your business requirements.

Support for ArcGIS Server Amazon Machine Images

ArcGIS Server Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) are certified by Esri as a ready to use image of ArcGIS for Server in Amazon Web Services (AWS). The AMIs include specific customizations of the ArcGIS for Server configuration to make the deployment efficient and reliable in AWS. Support doesn't cover running the setup of ArcGIS for Server on AWS EC2 instances. Support only covers users who leverage the certified AMIs.

Windows AMI customization

As users make changes to the setup and configuration of the ArcGIS Server AMIs, those changes divert the AMIs from the certified original setup. If the changes are already supported on the Windows operating system, it will be supported. Otherwise, those changes will be managed as unsupported changes.

Linux (Ubuntu) AMI customization

ArcGIS Server AMI for Linux is available on Ubuntu. Certification and support on Ubuntu is only for the Esri released ArcGIS Server AMI. Changes to the Esri released AMI will be treated as changes on an unsupported system.

Supported virtualization environments

All components of ArcGIS for Server, including ArcSDE, are fully supported on virtual environments as long as they run on supported platforms. See supported server platforms above. When running third-party applications with ArcGIS for Server, such as relational databases, the application must also be supported in a virtual environment. Check the third-party vendor for its virtualization support.
If an issue is found to be specific to Esri software in a virtual environment, Esri Support Services will attempt to reproduce the issue on a stand-alone machine. If an issue cannot be reproduced with any of the supported server platforms above on a stand-alone machine, Esri will not provide a fix or further support for issues that are specific to virtual environments except when the issues are in the following VM environments:
  • VMWare vSphere 5

ArcGIS 10.2 full release

ArcGIS 10.2 is a full release of the ArcGIS platform. It includes enhanced functionality, stability improvements, and better support for connectivity, security, and enterprise readiness.

ArcGIS 10.2 introduces several new products. Portal for ArcGIS is now a core product that you deploy on your internal network to share maps, applications, and other geographic information with other members of your organization. It enables the capabilities of ArcGIS Online behind your organization's firewall.

With the introduction of a new extension to ArcGIS for Server called ArcGIS GeoEvent Processor, organizations can process extensive real-time data on the fly and display relevant information from these feeds in ArcGIS clients. Other enhancements in ArcGIS 10.2 include improved support for using maps in the field in an enterprise, many new geoprocessing tools, support for new data formats and databases, and better search capabilities for rasters and imagery. In addition, new mobile applications and updated SDKs and APIs have been released.
